Unlawful Executive Order Attempting to Supercede State Election Jurisdiction and Limit Voting Access
The Trump Administration has signed an executive order intended to supersede the jurisdiction of States to operate, conduct, and regulate elections in the United States by placing the White House in charge of Colorado’s elections. It claims to block funding for elections for states that do not comply. The United States Constitution, Article 1, Section 4 dictates that only states and Congress can make or alter the “time, place, and manner” of holding federal elections.
- The Center for American Progress has released an article explaining in better depth the lack of authority by the Executive to dictate election requirements
- Colorado Common Cause has released a page explaining the illegality of this EO, analyzing potential impacts to Colorado, and discussing next steps citizens can make to protect their elections
